Facebook Event:

Ex-circus clown and fire eater, Rory McLeod is a one-man-soul-band, and poet, with a natural troubadour’s talent for weaving magical, musical, storytelling spells accompanied by his own bizarre solo orchestra of distinctive instruments. The spoons, finger-cymbals, bandorea, Djembe-drum, harmonica, guitar, trombone and-tap-dancing shoes accompany the rich, raw, deeply resonant voice of this singular, and liberating performer. Rory is a musical gypsy, whose melodies are infused with influences from Flamenco to country blues, through to Celtic, Eastern European and Calypso rhythms, and this show represents a fantastic opportunity to catch a truly charismatic and unique performer at close quarters in an intimate and atmospheric setting.

“I’ve travelled to look for work, to mend a broken heart, to be with someone I longed for. I’d travel to visit friends and on the way I’d make new ones, I’d roam because I was curious to see what was around the next corner, sometimes I travelled to follow the warmer weather and migrate… like the birds and the big whales and fishes do”.

Away With Words 6th Birthday special Thurs 22nd June @unionmashup.@awaywithwords

the “6th Birthday Special” one

THURSDAY 22nd June
Doors 7.30 pm – Start 8.00 pm. Upstairs at Union Mash Up, Princes Avenue, Hull
Admission – FREE

The next “AWAY WITH WORDS” open mic evening will take place at Union Mash Up, the epicentre of the cultural earthquake that is the HU5 post code area. This event has been bringing you the best spoken word performers since long before Rosie Millard typed Hull back into her satnav. The event will henceforth be referred to as the “6th Birthday Special” one.

Poets, performers, comedians and spectators are welcome to the cosy intimate surroundings of the upstairs bar at Union Mash Up on Prince’s Avenue, Hull.
Come along and perform your poetry, prose, comedy, jokes, satire in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

June special guest is the wonderfully talented and entertaining Stephen Thomas.

Stephen Thomas is a performance poet and rapper who is half German and half Yorkshire, so you can be sure that he’s extremely efficient with words and has very tight rhyming patterns. He is an experienced performer at poetry nights and festivals across the UK and is one of the hosts of Poetry is Dead Good in Nottingham.

Inspired by fun things and interesting people, his work is based on themes of relationships, identity and general silliness! He is one of the key members of the internationally-acclaimed Poetry Brothel movement and co-wrote the Brothellian Manifesto with Timothy Grayson.

Stephen’s first collection, Alphabet Spaghetti, is published by Big White Shed in May 2017.

To celebrate our 6th birthday there will be some additional amazing happenings in addition to our brilliant special guest and the usual spoken word festivities and this night is genuinely not to be missedAway with words june 2017
